The beginning of the end of DRM?
Let's hope this sticks, and that others come on board. Apple and EMI have announced that EMI is dropping DRM from its digital catalog, and offering higher quality to boot (256 kbps AAC vs. 128 kbps). It'll cost you 30 cents more per track (to $1.29) for DRM-less tracks on the iTunes store, but that's a price I'll gladly pay. It sounds like you will even be able to upgrade previously purchased tracks for the aforementioned 30 cents, and full albums will automatically come without DRM (with no price increase). I don't think I need to go into how huge this is.
Full press release here. DRM-free tracks should start appearing in May.
