When did you know?

As a somewhat-related follow-up to my lengthy (and incredibly nerdy) Star Wars post from a couple days ago, I was thinking about the part when I mentioned how much Star Wars had influenced the direction of visual effects over the years. As a corollary to that, I'm sure that countless individuals in the visual effects industry have been personally inspired to do what they do by one of the Star Wars films. However, I wasn't one of them. [Read More]

Holiday weekend

Monday is Memorial Day here in the States, and as I can't pass up an opportunity to turn a three-day weekend into a week-long vacation waaaay out of town, I suspect blogging is going to be rather light between May 28 and June 4. I know, I know... what will you (all three, perhaps four of you) possibly do without me?

In any event, I don't really discuss politics, so I'll just say this: Memorial Day has very deep meaning for a great many people here in the U.S., and regardless of your political bent or specific feelings about the U.S. administration and/or military, please take the time to say thanks to any member of our armed forces that you happen to know or run into this weekend. They sacrifice a lot to serve their country, so please let them know you appreciate their service.

That's about as political as I'll ever get, so to anyone who is itching for a flame war: please take your napalm elsewhere. Now, this particular spot isn't exactly a thriving bastion of rich comment threads; nonetheless, there are plenty of other more appropriate venues on this here series of tubes for those looking to get their rant on.

At any rate, on with the cookouts and I'll see you all on the other side...

The things you find in your attic

How this particular box with its veritable treasure trove survived countless moves without me being aware of its existence is beyond me, but man, I hit the geek nostalgia jackpot. [Read More]

All the oxygen in the room

I realized today (and not without a bit of astonishment) that we're getting close to the halfway point of 2007. Wha...? Anyway, I've been looking through the pieces I've written for DMN so far this year, and there has been a disproportionate number of articles that have had to do with Adobe products and/or announcements. Light Blogging schedule this week

I'm on the road this week (San Francisco/San Jose, CA, about 2400 miles from the batcave), and I'm not getting to sit down and write as much as I'd like, so I don't anticipate daily entries until I get back. I'm sure you'll manage just fine in the interim, despite the enormous emptiness you're no doubt feeling right about now.

Anyway, I'll leave you with a question that crossed my mind (and I'm sure many of yours as well) on the way out here: why don't they board planes back to front? Seriously, if anyone knows, please leave the answer in the comments section, because silly me, it seems a rather obvious way to get everyone on the stinking plane faster.

First the 50 Best, Now 21 Flops

Computerworld has posted their list of 21 of the "biggest" technology flops, which wasn't quite the fun memoryfest that the PC World 50 best list was. [Read More]

The 50 Best Tech Products of All Time

PC World has posted their list of The 50 Best Tech Products of All Time, and while there are a few fairly obvious omissions (Google, anyone?), it's also quite a trip down memory lane if you've been working or playing with technology for more than a couple of years. [Read More]

There's this cool new thing...

Seriously, all the kids are doing it. It's called a Web log, or, in the current vernacular, "blog." It's brand new - apparently, you write stuff down (like, what you did today or other such fascinating fare), millions upon millions of people magically read it, you gain all sorts of fame and celebrity, and make tons of cash. So, I gotta get in on that before anyone else figures it out. [Read More]
