Age of Conan: Hyborian Adventures (PC)

It has been 1 month since the release of Age of Conan: Hyborian
Adventures. The massively multiplayer online role playing game by
Funcom experienced a series of delays and ever increasing hype; but
players are finally hacking their way through enemies and wielding
sorcery in the world created by Robert E. Howard.
Funcom's launch was characteristic of previous MMO's of the past,
complete with bugs, crashes, and missing content. The environment,
however, is lush with gorgeous visuals, immersive sound design, and
ever addictive gameplay.

There are 4 base class categories: Soldier, Mage, Priest, and Rogue-types. Each category has 3 unique classes each, creating a total of 12 playable types in the game. You will create your own unique character with an overwhelming array of sliders and pulldowns until you find your final avatar. Then its off to the pirate town of Tortage where you'll spend your newbie levels getting a feel for the unique combat system and navigation.
The first 20 or so levels are equipped with a very detailed story line with voice-over actors giving out your quests until you get to the final boss encounter. After that the game really begins as you're set off into the wider world to adventure freely in the one of three major territories. From there you can swing from quest-line to quest-line theoretically to the level cap of 80.
The combat system within AoC is probably the aspect of the game that has the most appeal. Each swing of your sword or axe requires a stroke of the key, so you're not only clicking an "attack" button and watching your avatar do all the work for you. Each class has its own combo's and abilities where you have to hit certain attacks in order for them to successfully activate. This makes for very immersive gameplay and a very interesting player vs player arena.

The open PVP system is brutal. Anybody outside city walls can attack anyone and send them to the graveyard. This is perfect for the Conan world as any players you encounter by chance will be a potential skirmish. For those who simply prefer to play solely vs the computer must create their character on a PvE (Player vs Environment) server.
Another aspect of this new MMORPG that may be its strong point is that the content is indended for mature audiences. Combat animations include decapitation, plenty of blood, and limbs and appendages flying every which way. The stories within the quests are dark and the game world is brimming with savagery and death. Something to be expected within the Conan backdrop.
The game still has a lot of bugs to be ironed out and a lot of content to be added, but with a strong foundation for development Age of Conan promises to be a game with a lot to offer in the future.
