Balut is not cool, but Zimmern is

I love a bunch of crazy food dishes - but I just can't hang with balut.  It may have been about 2 years ago that my friends and I were talking about it.  Gilbert said his dad used to eat it; with a beer - as a snack.

That week, one of the other artists brought it to the studio for us to try.  Gib said he wouldn't eat it.  I was gonna try, but I couldn't get past the smell of it - - smelled like the chicken/duck barn we had growing up.  Others tried it (briefly)...  then last year - a guy comes on TV with a show about all kinds of wild stuff to eat.

Andrew Zimmern is a gastronomical superhero.

This year, his show - BIZARRE FOODS - just got a cool new animated intro (although I liked the tentacles of S1: see title by Motion504). http://www.travelchannel.com/TV_Shows/Bizarre_Foods

You can get the whole first season on DVD now!!  (And apparently there's a book coming)

Check out Chef Zimmern's show on The Travel Channel, and read his blog:

How can all this crazy food make you hungry? it just does.... mmmm jellied moose nose.  Plus beautiful video footage of the locations.  Hope this comes out in HD soon.  Although S1 was probably shot SD.

Comments:

Zimmern is nuts. He said that the Horchata (cinnamon flavored rice based beverage) in Spain was disgusting but he'll eat every variety of animal testicles in existence! There was an interesting bit on his love of balls on Colbert or one of those shows. Very funny. Bizarre Foods is always fun to watch, for sure.

Zimmern's crazy, but I'm tempted to try even the stuff he says is disgusting, just because, you know, there's no accounting for taste. What I love, though, is that he's sincerely interested not just in unusual foods but also learning about the cultures that produce those foods.
