The Scientific and Technical Awards Committee of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences is considering Realflow (Next Limit Technolgies) for a Scientific and Technical Achievement nomination.
Mark Stasiuk, a world expert in Realflow, made the 1-hour live presentation to the scientific and technical achievement committee, demonstrating Realflow's unique capabilities and its impact on the vfx industry. A few weeks later, a more in-depth investigation was held by the committee, who interviewed Mark and Next Limit executives, Victor Gonzalez and Angel Tena. We should know by the new year whether Realflow will be nominated for an Oscar! Congratulations Next Limit!
It was a sizzlin' summer for R&D at Fusion CI Studios. Always pushing the Realflow envelope, we created some very hot looking fire fx using RF4 on two R&D projects -- stylized fire for a live-action tv movie and realistic 'flame-thrower' fire for a feature. Achieving such outstanding results so quickly surprised even the Next Limit engineers. In the image above, the flame to the right of the line is real, to the left is a test render of flamethrower results simulated by Fusion and comp'd in beside the practical element. Also check out the 'head-on-fire' render test (quicktime movie).
"By applying some fluid dynamic results from studies of turbulence and developing algorithms to improve fluid coherence" says Fusion CI Studios co-founder and CG Supervisor Mark Stasiuk, "we've been able to show that Realflow can do gaseous effects like fire. Just like with other Realflow simulations, this means flames and explosions can interact with and push around scene geometry, and you don't have to take on new software packages to get these specific effects."
Finally, look for Fusion's Realflow Tutorial in the upcoming "Fluid Effects" issue of 3D World magazine. We're flooding a city street... in 24 easy steps!
