What the technology is *really* for.
First of all, I'd like to thank Ko for giving me a chance to blog here.
This is my first post, and instead of getting into some geeky point or other, I thought I'd address something more general on my maiden voyage. I've been thinking a lot lately about how easy it is to get enthralled by our magnificent digital tools. And also how easy to lose sight of what we wanted to do with those tools in the first place. If you have five minutes, look at this video of KT Tunstall, performing Black Horse and a Cherry Tree solo.
That's a lot of sound from one woman, created live in front of our eyes. The first time I watched this, the geek in me wondered who made the gear she's using. Then I thought again. It might be digital audio that allows her to overdub that way, but if I thought that the loop machine was the vital ingredient, then I was crazy. No, it's what she does with the technology, using it to make something that's so immediate, so organic. It's not so much about looping as it is about talent, hard work and a superb sense of performance.
Listen to it again. Notice how she orchestrates all those elements, building up percussion and vocals until, by the time she gets to the first chorus, she's created a wall of sound that would make Phil Spector drool. Then she pulls it back, giving us a chance to hear her voice almost in isolation. She keeps taking things up and down this way until, by the end, she's reached a crescendo that has her audience on their feet. As the old jazz players would say, she swings hard!
We could all learn from KT Tunstall. It's not the computer, it's not the software. Hopefully, we all know to stay away from the defaults and presets. But I think we also need to constantly refine and rethink what we're doing and how we do it. To commit ourselves to always striving to make it better. That has nothing at all to do with what tools we use. An editor I know would always say, "It's not the arrow, it's the Indian"
And most important of all, we need to remember that we got into this because we wanted to make art. And that art, among other things, is about never settling and always, always, having something to say.
