fun with foil: 3D easter stuff
I was going to make a quick project about printed foil (or applying a texture to separate faces of single item), and I got carried away in texture creation. Beware: Material layers in CINEMA 4D are so much fun (and easy), you can easily lose hours to creative play. file download.easter egg_foil_01.c4d.zip

Add notes in After Effects
Write notes for yourself, for
others. It's a good way to keep the project handoff nice and easy to
understand. There are so many different ways to do it in After
Effects, some more obious than others.

Photoshop CS3 : Precomps
If you're an After Effects user, you know all about "precomps" or "nested comps". It's basically a set of layers that creates a single image that you can use in your animation. In Photoshop CS3, you can also make precomps. They're called Smart Object layers, and you're gonna love 'em.

Mod-cast: Brad talks to modelers of WallE's Eve character & Toy Story 3
Brad Peebler of Luxology is back with another fascinating modcast; this time delving behind the scenes at Pixar Animation Studios to learn how two artists prepare characters and props for the big screen. Jason Bickerstaff and Rich Hurrey of Pixar provide fascinating insight on what it takes to create (and sometimes re-create!) high-quality 3D models of characters and props that will hold up in various shots in a feature film. The focus is on how topology matters as they discuss WALL-E, Presto and Toy Story 3. The interview also contains some fascinating bits about the early days at Pixar, including some funny examples of office life in the uber creative world of Pixar. The interview has a buoyant quality to it, with everyone clearly enjoying each others company.

Static Noise Project in AE CS3
I'm sure there are a dozen different versions of this online - - but it was easier to make (about 5 minutes) than it was to search for a reference. The audio was created with After Effects Audio plugins, so it's all self-contained, but you'll need AE CS3 to open it.
If you want some cool looking effects for your actual video, you'll probably want to purchase either TWITCH, a new plugin from Andrew Kramer, or DAMAGE, a new plugin from DigiEffects.

Arlene Bogna @ Art Scene Cal
Suvan Geer says:
It?s impossible to view Arlene Bogna?s ?Safari Americana? photographs and not sink into a nostalgic reverie. Her color saturated images of hulking man-made bovines standing like dumb, complacent sentinels in dark R.V. parks or empty dirt lots bring with them a strong whiff of this country?s historic car culture.
It?s Route 66, roadside-stands selling local produce and small Western towns with a home grown sense of humorous advertising moxie that her photo safari casts as its exotic locales. She asks us to consider what it is in human nature, or the American psyche, that makes us delight in the sight of painted, three dimensional animals perched atop sign poles or hawking honey from flat bed trucks. Often it is just the familiarity of a sight pulled up from the nation?s fast vanishing roadway past that we think about.
Read all @ArtSceneCal
You can see Arlene's work June 21 - July 18, 2008 at Gallery 825, West Hollywood
