video capture with a still camera
I've always advised my family and friends to ignore the video capture capabilities when purchasing a digital camera, an dinstead focus on the image capture capabilities. That was then. This is now. With video now as popular as ever thanks to cell phones, mini camcorders such as the FlipVideo device, and digital cameras, the quality of video coming from digital cameras has improved dramatically. I say this because the recent cameras I've looked at for ConsumerElectronicsNet.com have captured surprisingly good quality video, especially if you wish to upload that video to video sharing sites such as youTube, Grouper, and to a lesser extent, MySpace. The quality in the current camera I am looking at, the Canon PowerShot IS 550, is good to very good, so much so that I used it to capture an interview at the SIGGRAPH trade show in San Diego. I loaned my MiniDV camera to a Ninja Crayon so he could shoot some interviews. The only downside was I didn't have a large enough SD memory card to capture more interviews with the PowerShot, or I would have. The PowerShot captures 640 or 320 resolution video. 640 is knocking on 720s door. It is only a matter of time that digital cameras will capture SD video with their image sensors.
