Indie filmmakers and the camera adaptation
There's really not much more to be said about the scalable, flexible, retro-fit mind-set of the digital indie filmmaker that isint encapsulated in this image.
A small, palm sized Sony A1 HDV camcorder kitted out with mattebox, riser, lens adapter, French flap and suppourt rods. A rig for less than 10k that could easilly produce a projection ready theatrical release image if shot well and lit well and graded well (which can all be done from a laptop)

Or this - RedRock adapters turning a Canon HV20 into a serious digital cinema tool.

Or this...

Based on a Sony HC3 HDV consumer camcorder, costing just a couple of
grand, it has been significantly beefed up with a RedRock Micro M2
adapter, a Canon EF-lens mount plus the Canon 70-200mm 1:4 L lens. The
signal taken as HDMI output to a DeckLink Intensity card where it can
be captured direct to computer as 4:2:2 lossless HD.

The RedRock M2 at work again turning a humble Z1 into a beast. You can see some test fotoage of this rig

What have they done to the poor A1. I mean it's a teenager all of sudden.
I mean when you compare that to what I was using here , (1st pic - beta)what a world of difference in flexibility, freedom and muscle.
I love the A1 - just for its size and quality, and I tend to shoot neat with it, but yes I can see how Steven Soderbergh and budding Soderberghs would want this set up.
Once the basics are all there the magic can be conjured up from the lens and filters.
There was a mag in the UK which had a short but highly productive life as a resource, DV World (I have kept mine), and it performed an experiment using a telephoto lens similarly to the third camera in your list and the effects truly were amazing.
So I have been combing through more of your articles - er wow!
And the cinematic, visual aesthetic whether in promos or films/new features really will mark out the web as a serious playground as broadband matures.
Here's a blast from the past aVX1000 with a strip of tape holding the mike together as well.
The promo has a few interesting stories:
It features, the former head of the CIA and a war games exercise where an RAF Tornado shadows our plane- we could actually see the pilot's faces.
The camera fell into the sea; fished out in nanoseconds. Three days later it was still working. Unfortunately it doesn't have the same level of freedom as the A1. I'll miss that camera.
Cheers Mike
