You'd think for any editor the core principles of editing montage, as laid down by seminal Russian filmmaker Sergi Eisenstein in the 20's, would be second nature, innate knowledge. And yet you'd be surprised how many editors cannot accurately articulate what montage really is or similarly how many poorly cut media productions are broadcast around the world that fail to exploit the sheer power of editing and the visual sequence.
Heres a short video piece from a British TV series called Charlie Brooker's Screenwipe that looks specifically at editing and the nature of how TV, particularly reality TV, is cut to construct very specific repsonses and meanings. For new editors, this is film school in 5 minutes. For experienced editors this is the core fundementals of editing that you should remind yourself of everyday.
