The Apple iPod family album

We take a look at all of Apple's iPods past and present. It's sure been a journey since that chunky, black-and-white original.

(Credit: Apple)

The iPod has come a long way since the introduction of the original 5GB model in 2001. In 2002, Apple doubled the iPod's capacity and added the signature solid-state scrollwheel. A year later, the capacity had increased to as much as 40GB. And 2004 saw the introduction of several new iPods, including the mighty Mini, the pricey Photo, and the black U2 iPod. In early 2005, we witnessed the splashy arrival of the flash-based USB key Shuffle, the 30GB iPod Photo, and the updated Mini, which added a 6GB version to the series as well as improved battery life. Then came the 20GB photo-friendly iPod (Apple dropped "Photo" from the name of this and the 60GB versions) and the colourised iPod U2 Special Edition.

Late in late 2005, the dynasty continued with the arrival of the flash-based iPod wunderkind, the 1GB, 2GB and 4GB Nano in black or white. It meant the end of the line for the iPod Mini. Meanwhile the superthin 5G iPod (30GB and 60GB sizes, white or black) lost some weight but gained a bigger screen and an appetite for video. In 2006, Apple released a new metallic Nano, changed the Shuffle into a fashionable belt clip, and introduced the U2 Special Edition iPod (5G).

In late 2007, a new crop of iPods landed with a bunch of further tweaks. There were more subdued colours on Shuffle and Nano lines, with the third-gen Nano completely re-profiled (it became wider and shorter than before) so that it could play back video. Apple also increased the capacity of the hard drive-based iPod — now dubbed the Classic — to a capacious 160GB. The iPod interface underwent its biggest change in years, with the Nano and the Classic offering split-screen browsing with front-and-centre album art. And there was a new hero model, the iPod Touch, basically a thinner, phone-less iPhone. The Touch offered all the multimedia capabilities of an iPhone — Wi-Fi browsing included — you just couldn't make calls from it. And as icing on the cake, the Touch supported over-the-air purchasing of iTunes tracks.

In 2008 we saw revisions in all iPod offerings. The Touch received softer edges, an internal speaker and an App Store, while the Nano's form factor was whisked back to the taller, thinner silhouette of previous generations. Meanwhile the iPod Classic — the player that started it all — received a contentious update: its 80GB and 160GB versions were nixed in favour of a solitary 120GB model. And the Shuffle? It's still trucking along, with the only change being a revamp in colours for the new season.

DAT* - Digital Audio Tape - High quality tape used as storage for creating backups of server-based information.

DVD* - DVD stands for Digital Video Disc. A standard VCD records video data in MPEG-1 format. On the other hand, a standard DVD records video data in MPEG-2 format. A DVD player or a computer equipped with a DVD drive is required to play DVDs. Almost all DVD players also play VCDs.

Copy Music and Video Back to Computer from Zune to Zune 2

Microsoft has announced that Zune 2 will be available in the next month. If you upgrade your Zune to Zune 2 or get a new Zune, you will have to face the problem of transferring your files from Zune 1 to Zune 2. If the files from Zune1 can be moved to PC, then the problem can be easily fixed by moving the files from PC to Zune 2. But Microsoft restricts users from moving files between Zune and PC in order to protect copyrights. However, unlike what lots of us believe, you can actually move files from Zune to a partnered computer very only a few simple steps:

Step 1: Connect your Zune to your computer and launch the Zune desktop software (usually it will be launched automatically). Browse to the files on your Zune that you want to move to your computer.

Step 2: Click the button, and you will see the text in the right pane is slightly changed to "Drag Items Here to create a list to sync from XX (the name of your Zune) to your computer". Drag and drop the files from your Zune into this area.

Step 3: When you drag all the files you prefer from your Zune into this pane, click the Copy From Device button at the bottom of this pane. Then these files will be moved to your computer. These files will be moved to different locations on your computer, depending on their types. Most likely, they will be located in the root level of My Pictures, My Music and My Videos. Then you can just use your Zune desktop software to sync them to your Zune 2.

To put new music, songs and videos from CDs and DVD to Zune 2, you can just use conversion tool:
For CDs, Windows Media Player will do the job perfectly because it can directly rip CD music to MP3.

For DVDs and regular video files, there are even more choices. I have been using a conversion tool named Wondershare Zune Video Suite, and everything has been working smoothly so far. I think it will still work with Zune 2 because the format specs supported by Zune 2 are still the same.

Review of new iPod touch 2

When Apple first released the iPod touch, it was with its Wi-Fi capabilities and touchscreen interface - much more than an iPod. With new iPod software updates, Apple brought the apple iPod touch 2’s applications in line with the iPhone.

And there is also third party iPod software update as new iPod apps: Wondershare iPod Video Suite, which convert DVD and all popular video formats to iPod Nano new, new iPod Touch, iPod Classic and iPhone.

Price:
The latest iPod touch 2 model:
8GB capacities for $229;
16GB costs $299;
32GB costs $399
They also ship with the latest iPod touch 2.1 software.

Nike+ iPod integration:
First and foremost I love the Nike+ iPod integration.
The iPod touch 2 is quite thin and would work well as a small waist - or arm-banded device for workouts and not having to have a tiny little dongle hanging off the end is excellent.
Apple will also be selling the little Nike+ pucks separately now.

New iPod touch 2 game:
The second chance is gaming. This is a great opportunity for Apple to enter the casual handheld gaming market as a winner, not an also ran. Some of the other Apps are hit or miss, but it’s nice to have choice.

Volume controls and built-in speaker:

  1. Volume controls

Press the top of the rocker switch and the volume goes up. A press at the bottom of the switch causes the volume to decrease. Apple’s headphones that carry the Play/Pause switch and microphone— the Play/Pause switch works with new iPod touch 2. (It doesn’t on older iPod touches, even with the new 2.1 software.)

Handbrake   ?Mac/ Windows/Linux?????
Rip DVD folder, DVD image to various video formats without video editing.
HandBrake is an open-source, multiplatform DVD to MPEG-4 converter, available for MacOS X, Linux and Windows. It can convert VIDEO_TS folder, DVD image or real DVD (encrypted or unencrypted, but protection methods other than CSS are not supported and must be handled externally with third-party software), and some .VOB and .TS files to video. The outputs formats contain: MP4, MKV, AVI, OGM, AAC, MP3 etc.
It is the best free DVD to video ripper for Mac, but cannot run smoothly on windows. The converted video quality is not as good as shareware makes. There are a few output file formats to choose. And video editing is not supported by handbrake.

DVD Shrink    (Windows) ???
DVD to DVD/ISO image, cannot convert DVD to video.
DVD Shrink is a software application that allows you to backup your DVD disks. It allows user to select compression level for each video track separately to obtain the desired disc size. The software is capable of producing either an ISO image of the ripped DVD, or a VIDEO_TS folder for further processing, viewing or burning. And it also is capable of directly accessing the Nero burning engine, so if you have Nero installed, you can burn directly from DVD Shrink to make a backup copy of any DVD video disk.
This software cannot convert DVD file to video. So, it is invalid for those who want to put DVD movie onto portable players.

DVD Decrypter    (Windows)???
DVD to DVD/ISO image, cannot convert DVD to video.
DVD Decrypter is a software application that can create backup disc images of the DVD-Video structure of DVDs. It takes advantage of both the DeCSS Plus and VobDec algorithms for looking up and decrypting the CSS encryption. DVD Decrypter is also multi-angle aware, and capable of removing the Macrovision scrambling key, as well as the region code during the ripping process.
This software does better than Shrink in making backup of encrypted DVD. It also can not convert DVD to Video. And it has been stopped updating now. Version 3.5.4.0 is the final version.

How to Use Free DVD Ripper to Backup Your DVD

Many DVD collectors may run into the problem of sharing their DVD movies with friends and backing up DVD files on their computer hard drive. Here I want to share a method of copying and backing up DVDs using a free application. With this method, you can even copy protected DVDs.

Now I am going to introduce this method respectively for Windows and Mac users.

For Windows users
The application that has the most complete functions is DVD Decrypter. It can rip DVD to DVD folder, ISO file and burn ISO files to blank DVD discs. The steps to use this software are:

Step 1: Import DVD Disc
Download the software from the website of DVD Decrypter and install it. Insert your DVD disc. If it is protected, the program will prompt a message stating the protection type (RC, RCE, CSS, CPPM etc.) of your DVD along with a list letting you select your region. You can just tick the right region and click OK.

Step 2: Rip ISO file
DVD Decrypter provides three output methods: File Mode, IFO Mode and ISO Mode. If you want to convert your movie to an ISO file, you can just select “ISO Mode –Read” and click the DVD icon to start the conversion process. See the figure below:

Tips:
1. ISO-Read: To convert your original DVD to ISO image file on your hard drive.
2. After conversion, what you get will be a protection-removed ISO file. You can use a virtual drive tool, say DAEMON Tools, to load the ISO file and view your movie on your computer.
Note: Because FAT32 does not support files that are bigger than 4GB, you have to do the following: Settings -> ISO Read Mode -> File Splitting -> Auto. Thus, big ISO files can be split automatically.

Step 3: Burn ISO to DVD
Insert a blank disc twritable), select Mode->ISO-Wo your DVD drive (rite. Then click the DVD icon, and the new protection-free DVD will be burned. See the figure below:

Tip: Select Test Mode, the program will simulate the burning process. You can refer to this process to correct the settings.
Note: The latest version of DVD Decrypter was released on June 7th, 2005 and the version number is Version 3.5.4.0 (final).
It only supports Windows Server 2003 or below.
If you are a vista user, you can use DVD ripper software to remove DVD protections and convert them to regular video, and burn converted video to DVD with DVD burner software.

Additional Tips:
1 .File Mode, IFO Mode are often used to convert video and audio files. I will introduce them in another article about DVD Decrypter.
2. DVDShrink and Nero together can also help you get the job done. But Nero 8 alone will cost you $63.99.
3. For the info on how to convert regular video files to DVDs, you can refer to this step by step guide.

For Macintosh OS users
There are very few free applications like DVD Decrypter for Mac users. So the method I have discovered is to use two applications to copy DVD on Mac OS.
1. Use DVD Ripper software to remove DVD protection and copy DVD folders.
2. Use DVD Burner software to burn the copied DVD folders to a DVD disc.

Part 1. Copy DVD to a DVD folder
Step 1: Get Ready
MacTheRipper is one of the best free DVD Rippers on Mac OS. You can download it HERE. To install MacTheRipper, simply mount the .dmg archive by double-clicking it, and copy the MacTheRipper application from it to your Applications folder (or wherever you want it), along with this MacTheRipper Manual if you need it.
Step 2: Rip DVD
Run MacTheRipper, and insert the source DVD disc. MacTheRipper can automatically detect the info of the inserted DVD disc. See the figure below:

There are two major setting parts: Disc and Mode

  1. 1. RCE Region settings:
UOPS:allow you to skip or fast-forward through most DVD content, such as warning screens, previews etc.
    RCE Region:
If MacTheRipper displays "DISC RCE: CLEAR" after scanning the DVD, you can leave the option to OFF status.

If MacTheRipper displays "DISC RCE: -DETECTED-", you must set the option to the region in which the DVD was purchased. For example, if you have a DVD that was purchased in N. America (Region 1), and MacTheRipper says that RCE is detected, you must set the 'RCE Region' popup menu to 'RCE 1"

De-Macrovision:allow you to record your DVDs straight to VCR, or connect the DVD player through a VCR without getting a bunch of wavy lines. This is enabled by default.

    2.In Mode settings:
Select the Full Disc Extraction Mode to reserve all the info in the inserted DVD disc.

Note: If the coped DVD folder only contains one folder: VIDEO_TS, in order to play the final DVD disc, you should create an empty folder and name it AUDIO_TS in the DVD folder.

Part2. Burn DVD Folder to a blank DVD
Wondershare DVD Copy for Mac is an application that can be used to burn DVD folders. After you launch the software, you will see the window below:

Select Source:
Click the Browse button (the button of two arrows) in the Select Source field and import the coped DVD folder.

Select DVD Copy Method:
You can select the DVD ROM where you have inserted a blank DVD disc.

Click the Start button to start burning it to a new DVD disc.

Tip: A playable DVD disc should contain two folders: VIDEO_TS and AUDIO_TS. The AUDIO_TS folder is also required although it is sometimes empty.

This Mac method is what I have discovered for Mac users. However, I am no expert of Mac since I still use Windows most of the time. Probably this is not the easiest method, but I hope it can throw some light on how to copy DVDs on Mac OS.

Easy way to Rip DVD and remove DRM media on Mac and Windows

There are tips of the easy way to rip dvd and remove DRM on Mac and windows. Mostly, it?s for audiophile and film-goers. The introduced tools here are Apple iMovie HD and DVD Ripper Platinum.
Before part one:
What?s DRM?
DRM(digital rights management) is a restriction on the use or copying of files, imposed by the copyright owner. For example, songs and videos purchased from the iTunes Music Store have DRM protection and can only be used according to the license agreement.(From google define)
Blu-ray and HD DVD
What that means to you is that no standard Blu-ray player will be able to play HD DVD discs, and no standard HD DVD player can play Blu-ray discs. If a movie comes out in one format, there's no guarantee that it will be available in the other. Certain studios could release movies in both formats, but you'll still have to be careful not to buy the wrong version of the movie. So there is an applied way to share DVD and play on PC or playbacks such ipod, iphone, psp, ps3, wii and so on.
Part one: Get easy use DVD Ripper to rip protected DVD for windows
There is lots of DVD Ripper software to choose, you can convert online at Zamzar, or with free Handbrake, DVD Shrink, Automate unDRM? but here I?d preferring to introduce a professional and easy-to-useDVD Ripper I use - Wondershare DVD Ripper Platinum. It appears as all in one DVD Ripper, full version shareware, trial version rips any DVD free, new upgrade for more function on August 2008.
The best DVD Ripper rip DVD movies to almost all popular video and audio formats such as MP4, AVI, WMV, MOV, RM, H.264, 3GP, 3G2, VOB, MPG, FLV, WMA, M4A , MP3, AAC, AC3, etc with excellent quality.
It is also the first DVD Ripping program that supports almost all portable video/audio players, and it can easily rip DVD to iPod , Zune, iPhone, Apple TV, PSP, Xbox 360, PS3, Archos, iRiver PMP, Creative Zen Vision, MP4/MP3 Player, Smart Phone, Pocket PC, PDA, Mobile Phone and so on.

Here is the official website of this DVD Ripper platinum: http://www.dvd-ripper-copy.com/dvd-ripper-platinum.html
And the detailed guide about how to rip DVD to any format: http://www.dvd-ripper-copy.com/guide/dvd-ripper-tutorial.html
Part two: Free remove iTunes DRM music on Mac
1.However, in order to remove DRM protection, you will need iMovie - iMovie is a separate application, the current iteration of iMovie released with the iLife?08 software bundle is iMovie 7.1. You can download iMovie at Apple. Once downloaded and installed, start iMovie and ?Create a New Project? titled ?DRM-free?, then save the project to your Desktop.

2.In the iMovie window, select the ?Media? tab located between ?Themes? and ?Editing?. You will notice that the top right portion of the interface now offers a media browser. Select the ?Audio? tab and locate the playlist which contains purchased music, or search by artist / title.

Select the DRM-laden song and drag the file from the media browser into the iMovie timeline where it says 'Drag audio here to build your project.?
3.In order to export the song, iMovie requires that a visual image be associated with the audio track. Simply drag a blank image (or any other image as you like) to the track above the previously imported audio file.
Once iMovie has processed the image, select the ?Share?? sub menu item from found inside ?Share? in iMovie?s menu bar.

4.Select ?Expert Settings? in the ?Compress movie for:? drop-down menu, for selecting ?Expert Settings? mode will provide the options to export the file as an audio file. Then click the ?Share? button.

5.In the ?Save as? dialogue, select ?Sound to AIFF?, in the Export drop-down menu, choose an appropriate directory for iMovie to export to, input title and ?Save?. iMovie will compress and export the movie project as an audio file in 15-40 seconds, it depends on your machine configuration.

Locate the exported AIFF audio file and drag to your iTunes Library, then right-click on the file and select 'Convert Selection to AAC?. Once completed, ?Get Info? on the new file, add album art, done.
