Golden Compass spawns new games

New Line Cinema's Golden Compas
is due to hit theaters on December 7, but the merchandising has already
hit the shelves. I wish I could say that the games tied to the
movie look just as cool - - but when have they ever?
I really feel for the game developers - who are usually under much
tighter deadlines than the movie makers to produce the game for the
movie. (For an amusing look at this, listen to PLAY VALUE episode*.
The movie looks to be pretty fun....
Whether the games can follow suit remains to be seen.

Sababa Toys has their offering of a DVD based board game. You
watch the scenes on the DVD and answer questions in addition to the
board and spinner based play.
Battle against Mrs. Coulter and the Magisterium to help Lyra reach her final destination with this action-packed
Golden Compass DVD Board Game.
The Magisterium DVD includes original movie excerpts, 3D animations,
and a working virtual compass! Game contains sculpted pieces of your
favorite Golden Compass characters, four daemons, unique playing cards,
plastic chips, credit metre, and game board plus six smaller game
boards representing different locations from the movie! 2-4 players.
You can purchase this from the
Scholastic Store online for under $40.
The other offering comes from SEGA. While I believe
the game is probably still under massive crunch time, with delivery
dates still fuzzy, the screenshots aren't promising for the movie
tie-in console game:
This is the level they should be hitting:
