High Tech Steak grillery: TEC Advantage

InfraRed thermometers, infrared cooking.  Taste the meat not the heat.  nah, I like my Kingston grill and coal.

But if you need to get more high tech in the backyard, check out this crazy grill.  If you tax your kettle and half barrel like I do, this is probably not for you, but it's completely state of the art cookery:

TEC’s Revolutionary New, Flare-Proof, Infra-red Burner System
The innovation begins with the burner system you see above. Specifically constructed of 100% stainless steel, TEC’s new burner is the first ever developed to produce 100% infra-red heat. Although radiant energy is inherently non-uniform, the apertures of this burner are specially configured to distribute heat evenly across the cooking surface. The radiant glass panels, a layer of high temperature glass resting between the burners and the cooking grids, block air flow below the cooking grids that causes flare-ups and vaporizes food drippings to create a smoky vapor that imparts a delicious outdoor grilled flavor. The end result is a flare-proof grilling system that cooks with 100% Infra-red energy, evenly distributes heat across the entire cooking zone - with no hot or cold spots - and infuses food with a great charbroil flavor.

Is Blu-ray Worth It?

Blu-ray won out to become the high-def disc format of choice, but its competition has never been fiercer. Digital downloads from a variety of online sources are selling on the convenience factor. Upscaling standard DVD players are much cheaper and produce a decent-quality picture. Is there any room left for standalone Blu-ray players? [Read More]

Solar Battery Power for hiking / camping

Seems like everyone needs a cel phone wherever you go - grocery store, to a friends house, getting picked up after school.  But "back in the days when I was a kid" cel phones were good for emergency use, when you couldn't get to a pay phone (or wait).

You might not want to answer one when you're camping, but you might need to use it (if you can get reception out of the canyon).

But what about when the battery runs out?   The iSol is a solar charger for a bunch of phones, and it works on your iPod too.

Here is a list of some of the phones it works with:

ERICSSON: T28, R310, R320, A2618S, R520m, T29, T39, R380, T65, T66,T68, T60, R600, T20

How to fend off mosquitos?

Gaiam claims that their $10 solar powered mosquito repellers work.  I know their yoga products work - - I have some, and they do a good job, but I know that mosquitos around here aren't held at bay by much - even bug spray.

But if you're trying to be nature friendly; a solar powered device that doesn't kill the bugs might be a good solution.  Of course, there isn't the pleasant smell of citronella that goes with it.

You've got a shadow: NTI backup software

With the advent of larger and larger files, and most of us are putting more importance on digital data - it's important that YOU BACK YOUR FILES UP.

You know, I lost my PC last year, and I couldn't get any of the data off because the RAID controller went down with the ship.... well, if I had just backed up to something as easy as an external firewire drive, I probably wouldn't have spent an additional $750 just to recover those files.
----------------------------

NTI Shadow puts an end to losing valuable data, photo, video, and music files that have been modified in between scheduled backups.  It maintains real-time, continuous backup of all changed files without burning up valuable system resources.

By adding new technology we've expanded your options to include backup to any optical media...including Blu-ray.

Now Shadow will back up to virtually any system-attached drive including USB flash, mobile storage devices (micro drives), internal and external hard drives, NAS devices, and more.

You can schedule multiple and concurrent backup jobs in their native file format, which means no additional proprietary software is required to restore files. Restoring is literally as easy as drag and drop.

With Shadow and external storage of your choice folks simply won't lose a photo, a file, a video, a song again.  You can download a free demo version of the software - - to make sure that it's backing up, even when you're not.

The demo is FREE, the software is less than $30/US

IR for your heat

So it costs a little more than the old analogue style guage, but doesn't all technology?

Professional chefs have relied on this technology to accurate detect the surface temperature of a pan. The key to consistent results is a consistent technique. Generally, this is almost impossible for most people at home. Ovens vary, cookware varies, etc... This is why Thomas Keller's French Laundry restaurant (top in U.S.) uses a laser thermometer. If a pan needs to be 325F, it can be.

The culinary laser themometer uses infrared technology to easily and quickly measure surface temperature without touching the surface. The laser is merely a pointer to assist with aiming. Just aim, pull the trigger and the temperature will be instantly displayed on the LED display.

Great for pan temperature, BBQ, checking the performance of your oven or refrigerator, and much more. Plus, there's a cooking temperature reference guide on the side of the thermometer, insuring perfect results every time. As an extra bonus, this version of the Bonjour laser thermometer also has a probe thermometer for measuring internal food temperature.

Measures from 0F to 932F. Batteries included. It's about $80 US.   Find a lower shipped price? They'll beat it.
